Owning Your Sensuality, Week 1: The Power of Smell
Jennifer Brennan | MAR 9, 2021
Are you numb from the neck down? When was the last time you were fully aware of just one of your senses?
If you live "up in your head" (and who doesn't from time to time?), I invite you to journey with me the next 7 weeks as we drop down into our bodies and take ownership of our sensuality. We'll explore the 5 common senses (smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing) and open to the possibility of deepening our spiritual and intuitive senses as well.
Before I dive in to this week's focal point, I'd like to explain what I mean by the word "sensuality" so that we are starting with a clear understanding. Some dictionary definitions of sensuality include banal (and even gross) language like "deficient in moral, spiritual, or intellectual interests" (Merriam-Webster.com). The Oxford Dictionary defines sensuality as "the enjoyment, expression, or pursuit of physical, especially sexual, pleasure." Sensuality is also linked to words like "carnal" and "fleshly" which often have derogatory connotations.
Don't get me wrong: heightened personal sensuality can indeed lead to more enjoyable sexual experiences. More on that another time.
When I embody sensuality, it's a much richer experience that any of the standard definitions. It's as if my senses are fully alive, vibrant, brilliant, and electrified. I am mindfully connected to my internal landscape, I am aware of my physical body, and I am empathetically in sync with the world outside of my body.
Let's get sensual!

This week, I invite you to attune to your sense of smell. If you enjoy journaling, having a focal point for meditation, or connecting with a loved one for sensual exploration, here are some prompts:
I'd love to hear how you connect to your sensuality this week! Send me a note or post a photograph about your favorite smell! You can share your insights with me on Facebook, Instagram, or via email.
I'm off to indulge in some of my favorite smells: a new box of crayons, freshly baked bread, and flowers--even those without a strong fragrance smell earthy and fresh and I dig that!
From my nose to yours,
Jennifer
